During Art Walk on Thursday February 4th the gallery, along with Trisha will celebrate a new body of work entitled “An Evolution of The Colorful Life.” This series, containing 30 new works, were created over the last year in both Vancouver, BC and Todos Santos.
“This is a story of a little girl who lived in the arctic territories. Under the northern lights and on the land of the midnight sun. She found her passion for art and was taught how to use a paintbrush. But feeling no emotional connection to the snow or to the cold, the hands of destiny gradually guided her south towards the ocean. It was there where she fell in love with a sailor and created a family. The wild coast and natural island life was truly inspirational and nurturing to her creativity. But feeling no emotional connection to the rain and grey winters, the hands of destiny guided her once again…further south. This time they brought her to a Magical Town. In a warm and beautiful landscape where the whale met the cactus - a happy, sunny and adventurous place where she is inspired daily by all the Colorful Life that is there.”

Gallery owner Ida Victoria says, "I am very excited for this show! Trisha Oldfield has not been in the gallery for long, but in the short time that she has been, she has gained a following and her work sells quickly. Her collages are SO Mexico and perfect for our gallery- her pieces are colorful, edgy, whimsical but sophisticated & truly unique. Her love of Mexico and it's constant inspiration for her is evident, and technically I am amazed by her ability to combine such a wide variety of mediums so seamlessly to create these fantastic little worlds. Trisha and her work are a great addition to our gallery, proud to have her work here! I hope you join us to celebrate this new series next Thursday night and to meet Trisha. Look forward to seeing you!”

Trisha writes, “I have fallen in deep inspiration with the rich culture I’ve observed in Mexico for the past 15 years. The colors, the patterns, the people and their personalities and traditions and most of all, the diverse natural landscapes. This inspiration has resulted in a series I have been having a love affair with called “Colorful Life”. This series has thrown me into the arms of a medium called mixed media collage and I will never look back. I love collage because of its spontaneous, forgiving and narrative nature. It is therapeutic. I feel I can express myself better with this medium more than I can with just a paintbrush or with just a camera. It not only opens a world of impossible associations but can harmoniously link thoughts, styles and even artistic technique used throughout history. It breathes new life into old discarded forgotten art that should be appreciated and admired.”

Trisha Oldfield is an emerging multi-media collage artist. Her work possesses a distinctive contemporary style – a result of her strong background and experience in graphic design and commercial illustration. Her collages are composed of custom & vintage photographs and illustrations, acrylic paint, pouring mediums, specialty papers and wood - all orchestrated together into detailed and whimsical compositions.

San José del Cabo Art Walk 2015-2016

Picture

This year´s Art Walk Starts Thursday October 29th but don´t stop visiting the galleries before that, most of them are now open from Monday to Saturday!

Don´t miss out on this popular weekly event held every Thursday evening in San José del Cabo from 5pm to 9pm between the months of October and June. This event was established, promoted and organized by the Gallery District Association in the hopes of drawing art lovers and tourist away from the Main Square and into out color-filled back streets located behind the church.  With its popularity growing over the years, the local government decided to close the main street of Obregon to car traffic in order to accommodate all of the visitors to our district every Thursday evening. Enjoy an evening strolling through the Gallery District, visiting the art galleries, sipping wine and dining in our neighborhood restaurants. Often galleries will have special events such as "artist in attendance" or openings of new exhibitions.

December  24th   Art walk   from 10am to 8pm

December  31st  Art walk   from 10am to 8pm

Buy Fine Art Without the Snobiness

Picture
By Ida Gustavson

When I was in art school in New York City I would plan days to go visit galleries. Not to buy art, but to appreciate it and learn more about what was going on in the art world and about the artists involved. But even with an art background and dressed in my best clothes it was a daunting experience to walk into some of these galleries. The person working in the gallery would instantly judge that I was not a buyer and therefore act as if I was really not cool enough to even be in there.  This treatment and attitude really turned me off, and made me aware of why people are sometimes intimidated to walk into a gallery, let alone ask questions and buy art. Of course that was New York City, but I believe that people who don’t know a lot about art feel that they can not appreciate it the same as someone who has some knowledge of the art market. This is so not the case! The greatest thing about art is that it is 100% subjective, and a person does not need a PHD in art history to know what they like and what they don’t like. Appreciating, viewing and buying art for your home should be a fun learning experience.
Picture
Selecting art for your home is a personal process. The art should reflect your personality and your sense of style and it is a great way to put your unique signature on a space. Artwork in a home should reflect the homeowner. It creates a visual dialogue in the space and helps set the mood or feeling you are trying to evoke. A work of art can be humorous, deadly serious, thought provoking or just plain colorful, but in the end, it should reflect you and your style.
The best advice I can give to people with little or no art buying experience is to go with your gut feeling and then ask lots of questions. When you walk into a gallery, hopefully someone greets you and welcomes you to walk around and take a look. See what strikes you and catches your interest and then ask questions. Art is such a great topic to talk about because it is so subjective. The interpretations of a work are endless and can be a lot of fun to discuss. The owner of a gallery will most likely have some insight into the artist’s inspiration and intention and this information can open up a whole new dialogue between you the viewer, and the work of art. Take this opportunity to learn as much as possible about the artist, his medium and technique. Part of the joy of owning a fabulous painting or sculpture is being able to discuss the piece with visitors to your home.
Picture
Another important factor in choosing a work of art is budget. Unfortunately it is the least romantic part of selecting art for your home but an obvious reality. Have an idea of what you want to spend and look in that price range. Galleries for the most part carry a wide range of art for different budgets. Let the gallery know what price range you are interested in, and they will be more than happy to show you options. Good art is not always expensive and not all expensive art is necessarily good. Emerging artists are a great place to begin because their prices are usually lower. They are trying to establish collectors and they are producing their best work in order to get their foot into the art market door. Another option in today’s digital world is fine art reproductions. The quality of today’s reproductions is impressive and though they are not originals, many are printed in a limited edition and signed and numbered by the artist, the smaller the edition the more valuable they are. Don’t be afraid to discuss your budget. Galleries and artists want your business and for the most part they will try and accommodate a potential client and collector. If you have fallen in love with a piece, but it is out of your price range, talk to the gallery about smaller works or studies by that artist that might be more suitable to your budget.

The galleries in San Jose del Cabo’s Gallery District, as a collective, have a wide range of art for all tastes and budgets. From internationally recognized artists to Mexican folk art, the choices are endless and the selection is great. Each gallery has their individual rosters of artists and is knowledgeable and friendly. It is a great place to start when looking for that perfect piece of art for your home in Los Cabos or afar. And, I promise there is not an ounce of snobiness to be found!

Interactive Art Exibition in Cabo San Lucas

Interactive Art Comes Alive

True art is created not only by the painter, but by the viewer. The way each individual perceives an art piece, transforms that art piece. We all bring our own culture, background, and experience when approaching and interpreting art, therefore the art becomes what we want it to become.

So it's only appropriate that the viewer should be a part of every art piece, they should be the ones to bring it to life. Which is exactly what Ivan Guaderrama is doing in his newest exhibit "Interactive: Art Comes Alive" taking place in Cabo's infamous Luxury Avenue on April 15th.

Every art piece in the exhibit holds an interactive element that only comes alive through the participation of the viewer.
Music lovers will find the perfect piece with an interactive piano piece, combining real music and art through the experience of touch. Families and couples will find a new excuse to get close with Guaderramas interactive paintings and bench that brings light, and sound with the touch of a hand or the lightest of kisses. Classical literature fans will delight in paintings that not only inspire through sight, but read poetry to you by a single finger touch. Colors will change, music will play, and art will be experienced like never before in this new ground breaking exhibit brought to you exclusively by Ivan Guaderrama.

Why buy art from Gallery District Association Members?

Why buy art from Gallery District Association Members?

Behind San Jose del Cabo’s historic main square and church lies the ever-growing Gallery District, which in recent years has become the cultural center of Los Cabos with many high-end fine art galleries displaying original paintings, sculpture, photography, prints and jewelry by local, national and international contemporary artists. Among these art galleries are shops housing the works by the top folk artists and artisans of Cabo & Mexico.

The official members of the The Gallery District Association, established in 2007, boast a large and varied cumulative roster of artists. The owners and staff of these Gallery Members work directly with their artists and stand by the originality, quality and value of the works of art. Not everyone located in our District or within San Jose del Cabo can give a guarantee of originality or true value, and the Association can only back and be responsible for the works of art sold by Official Members of the Association. We caution potential buyers to ask questions and make sure that art sellers outside of the Association can provide authentication of works as originals.

What Our Clients Are Saying

" We enjoyed another great Thursday night at Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo. Some galleries have moved, and some new ones have opened, and it's nice to say Hello to a couple of the gallery owners I visit every year. Add this to your list of activities the next time you're in Cabo! "

We were able to build in a trip through town to experience the art walk. The city square was decorated with Christmas decorations and was gorgeous. The art walk was also a great experience, with shops and galleries open late to showcase their work. I suggest adding the Art Walk to a pre-dinner agenda in San Jose del Cabo.
